Inventory the site
List the website files, databases, domain names, subdomains, scheduled tasks, SSL certificates, and email accounts. Note the versions of the software and runtime the site currently needs.
Moving a website involves more than copying files. Use this checklist to plan the move, protect your data, and reduce avoidable downtime.
List the website files, databases, domain names, subdomains, scheduled tasks, SSL certificates, and email accounts. Note the versions of the software and runtime the site currently needs.
Confirm the plan supports your application, storage and traffic needs, database version, required PHP or other runtime, and any special modules. Compare current and renewal pricing before ordering.
Save a copy of site files, databases, and email data where applicable. Keep a copy outside the hosting account and check that the archive can be opened before you begin.
Record current DNS records, including mail-related MX, SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records. Lowering DNS TTL ahead of time can help some changes propagate sooner, but existing resolvers may retain cached records.
Transfer the files and database, update application settings, and test using a temporary URL or local hosts-file entry. Check forms, logins, checkout, images, redirects, and email sending before switching traffic.
Update DNS only after testing. Keep the old hosting active during the transition, monitor errors and mail delivery, and avoid making conflicting content changes on both copies.
After DNS has settled and the new site and email work as expected, keep a final backup and review any remaining domain, certificate, or billing dependencies before cancellation.
